Nahargarh fort was built in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh. The fort is perched on the edge of the Aravalli hills overlooking the city of Jaipur. This strategic location gives this fort a very scenic look. Along with Amer Fort and Jaigarh fort, Nahargarh once formed a strong defensive ring for the city of Jaipur. Nahargarh fort was originally named Sudershangarh, but later became known as Nahargarh. Nahargarh was primarily built as a hunting residence of the Maharajas. In fact the name means “Abode of Tigers”.

Legend behind the name Nahargarh

There is a very interesting legend behind the name of the fort. It is believed that the name ‘Nahar’ represents Nahar Singh Bhomia, a Rajput whose spirit haunted the place and obstructed the construction of the fort. According to the legend, construction of the fort used to happen during daytime, but at night, mysterious forces would be at play and all the work done during the day would be left undone. Nobody could explain this and everyone was bewildered. Finally, the King had a dream about Nahar’s spirit, who told him that the land that the fort was being built on, was his. So the king built a temple for Nahar and Nahar’s spirit was finally appeased. After the temple was built, the construction of the fort went on smoothly and the name “Nahargarh” stuck.
